Twin sisters Sue and Hayley Tompkins have been developing parallel art careers and don’t usually work together. For the first exhibition at westlondonprojects they were invited to consider their artwork collaboratively.
Sue often uses language for her works to create word pieces and performance. For westlondonprojects she produced 72 sheets of hand typed and folded paper. These artworks were distributed throughout one of the gallery spaces, neither producing a grid nor hung in an arbitrary manor but delicately and thoughtfully placed. This piece was brought together with the performance Elephants Galour where she rhythmically spoke of listed phrases steeped in historical context whether art, film or life.
Hayley is known for her small-scale paintings. The paintings at westlondonprojects were made from gouche on torn paper, and works on clay and plaster. These works resemble fragmented museum antiquities – uniquely fascinating and intrinsically beautiful. The three lime washed tables further develop the notion of art history and muselogy. The artworks are arranged and placed in relation to the physical exhibition space and to each other, assisting the dialogue between the viewer and the artwork.
